Well, in a word, “No”. Red is not the new black, and I feel this way not only because it has not been seen on the runways recently, but also because I look disastrous in the color. However, ever a classical fashionista at heart, there isn’t a better way to primp for the holidays than a red lip and red tips.
On a recent trip to Manhattan, where I was lucky enough to hear Troy Suratt of Maybelline New York talk at Teen Vogue’s Fashion U, he leaked the secrets to the perfect red lip. It isn’t just the perfect shade of red, which I advise playing with at your local beauty counter. Once you have your lipstick in hand (I personally love Mac, Lancome, and Clinique for their blends), the trick is to use your finger to dab the color onto your lips. Don’t be afraid to push the color in, either. Once you are done, blot, and follow by a dab of gloss. The trick to this is subtlety, so don’t go overboard with the gloss… You aren’t trying to stop a jet engine.
As for nails, I sweep OPI Matador Red on my fingers and toes every year during the holidays. It is that perfect holiday red, and followed with a coat of OPI clear topcoat and your perfect mani/pedi should last about a week.
