With the return of fall, and the subsequent onslaught of chilly weather, comes the requisite lengthening of sleeves and hems. Bulk in fabric and texture is utilitarian. As always, hues deepen to coordinate with the overcast sky and stoic landscape.
In a response to the harsh political climate, the seemingly endless war overseas, and an economy that leaves something to be desired, art seems to be imitating life by darkening falls already deep hues. Designers are resonating through their collections that black is the new black. Styles are coming back to a depression era style marked by boxy shapes and simplicity of design.
Karl Lagerfeld, legendary designer of Chanel and Fendi, made his runway debut with his Karl Lagerfeld/Lagerfeld. His designs continued the wintry trend though strong, sophisticated lines in the always acceptable, and currently inevitable black.
Tracy Reese, with her collection shown at the fall fashion shows, exemplifies the theme through pieces such as a long, grey cape with turquoise lining. Notable, is the absence of the overtly girlish tendencies of her designs. Although her styles are still ‘pretty’, they lack the excess of ribbons and bows from seasons past.
This fall Reese debuted her collection of accessories, as a testament to the changing landscape of fashion. With clothing styles becoming more simplistic, fashionistas must use every item in their arsenal of accessories to stand out from the crowd. In a response to the heightened importance of the accessory, they have literally grown larger. From large leather hobos, to oversized sunglasses, the accessory is no longer just a supporting actor, but can be the main focus of an outfit.
Look for more deep plums, dark burgundies, chocolate browns, and an omnipresent black in stores this fall, and into winter. Liven up this look by layering on classic pieces in a variety of colors, textures, and fabrics. A classic black pantsuit in wool or gabardine, layered with a heavy trench, and supple leather boots and an oversize bag in colors like deep burgundy or chocolate looks polished, while working with this seasons offerings.
