If you haven’t yet heard of Mukhtar Mai, you should have. This young women was gang-raped at the order of a tribal council in Pakistan for a crime that was never even committed, and was certainly never believed to have been committed by her. Instead, she was the price that was paid for an alleged affair between her younger brother and a woman of a neighboring clan. I find it worth noting that her brother was 12 years old, while the woman was in her 20′s.
Anyway, I have become very interested in this story as I find it especially disturbing, and at the same time miraculous as Mukhtar Mai has since become the first woman in Pakistan to prosecute her assailants for an honor-crime, as well as taking the money awarded to her for damages and putting it straight back into Pakistan in her efforts to educate and assist women of the country. As we all know, when you lift up a minority group of a country, you lift up all the people of a country with them.
I know this is a bit off topic for me, but I am seeking a creative way to raise money for her organization. My first impulse was to host a drive on FirstGiving.org in which I would get a tattoo of one of her quotes in Arabic at completion. However, although I still think its a unique and creative idea, I am concerned that because tattoos are forbid in Islam, this would be tacky at the very least. Your thoughts???
